The Church Worth Coming Home To

    SENT, Part 3

You pull into the driveway, and your phone switches to your home Wi-Fi.

You didn't tap anything. It just knows. It's been there a hundred times.

Now think about walking into a room full of people. Sometimes you feel welcome before anyone has said much at all. Other times, you wonder whether there's room for you.

    They Devoted Themselves

After about 3,000 people responded and were baptized, Luke describes the life they began sharing:

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (Acts 2:42).

Teaching. Fellowship. Breaking bread. Prayer. Four ordinary practices, done together.

Devotion means keeping at it. When it's exciting and when it isn't.

Crowds come for events. Families come home.

    No Needy Persons

"They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need" (Acts 2:45).

Later, Luke says "there were no needy persons among them" (Acts 4:34).

When the Holy Spirit fills a room, He doesn't just warm up the worship. He opens up the wallets, the garages, and the kitchens.

About 300 years later, the Roman emperor Julian, who wanted the old pagan religion back, complained in a letter that Christians were caring for their own poor and the pagans' poor too. The church's critics couldn't stop the love.

    Glad and Sincere

"They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts" (Acts 2:46).

Some places are fun but fake. Others are honest but miserable. The table in Acts 2 held both joy and sincerity.

Think about what that could look like here. A meal when someone's week falls apart. A ride when the car won't start. An invitation for the person who usually gets overlooked.

    The Table at the Center

At the center of the early church's tables was another table: the meal Jesus shared with His disciples on the night He was betrayed.

"This is my body, which is for you" (1 Corinthians 11:24).

We didn't become family because we like each other. We belong to Jesus, who gave His body and His blood for us. That shared faith calls us to love one another.

    The Lord Added

"And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved" (Acts 2:47).

Not the marketing team. The Lord.

That gives us both a responsibility and a reason to trust Him. We share the gospel, welcome people, and care for one another. We depend on God to change hearts.

    Bring It Home

    1. Show up. Belonging takes time together.
    2. Notice who's carrying something heavy, and help carry it.
    3. Put somebody at your table. A pizza, a pot of chili, donuts on the porch.
    4. When someone new walks in, make sure they don't need the password.

Be the family Jesus can bring people home to.

And if you've never given your life to Jesus, nobody at His table earned their seat. His grace invites you to turn to Him in faith. You're welcome to explore that with us.
